The Legal Career Market Isn’t Shrinking. It’s Expanding.
For years, the question in legal has been whether AI will take jobs away. The data from this fall points to a different story. The market is getting bigger, new roles are appearing faster than people can name them, and talent is moving in every direction.

A market with more doors than before
The traditional legal career had four paths: Big Law, corporate law, government, and service providers. That was the whole map. Today the map has more territory. AI-enabled law firms and AI-enabled law departments have joined the list, and a few more paths are still unnamed. We don’t know yet what they will be called, but the shape is clear. The pie is not getting cut into smaller slices. It is getting larger.

The economics back this up. Legal spending is about 1.3% of U.S. GDP, and as the economy grows, the legal market grows with it. AI will take a slice of the work through efficiency, but the pie is growing faster than that slice can shrink it. Some estimates put the broader market at $1 trillion.

New titles, new employers
You can see the change in the job titles. Mastercard has a Chief Future Officer. JPMorganChase is hiring an Agentic AI Governance Lead. Microsoft wants a Legal AI Product Manager, Amazon a Generative AI Product Manager, and EY an AI Value Realization Lead. Anthropic has a Head of Claude for Legal. Five years ago, most of these titles did not exist.

The roles are also spread across the whole ecosystem.
Corporations
AI governance, AI strategy, agentic AI, and legal innovation.
Law Firms
Legal engineers, knowledge engineers, and AI innovation leaders.
Software / AI
Product counsel, AI product managers, and applied engineers.
Services / Consulting
AI advisory, legal transformation, and change and adoption.

Who is hiring right now
A recent scan of current postings found 60 roles across 32 employers, split into three groups.
Latham & Watkins, Simpson Thacher, Kirkland & Ellis, Sidley, Weil, and Skadden, among others.
Bristol Myers Squibb, Cisco, Novartis, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, HSBC, Pfizer, and Coca-Cola, among others.
Harvey, Legora, OpenAI, Anthropic, Thomson Reuters, Clio, and LexisNexis, among others.

The pattern is easy to spot. AI governance counsel shows up at banks, pharma companies, chip makers, and law firms alike. Legal engineering shows up at firms and vendors. These are not niche experiments. They are real positions with real budgets.

What the pay looks like
Posted base salaries, verified on September 25, 2026, show that these roles pay well.
| Employer | Role | Posted base |
|---|---|---|
| Latham & Watkins | Legal Engineering Attorney | $220K to $250K |
| Adyen | Senior AI Governance Counsel | $210K to $275K |
| Simpson Thacher | Director, AI Governance & Risk | $325K to $375K |
| OpenAI | Senior Counsel, AI Product (Enterprise/API) | $330K to $366K |
| Anthropic | Regulatory Counsel, AI Regulation, US | $335K to $385K |
U.S. roles. Base salary only. Current postings verified September 25, 2026.

The takeaway is that the new work is not a consolation prize. In several cases it pays as well as or better than the traditional track.
A path with steps, and a career with moves
Legal engineering shows how these careers can grow. There is now a ladder in a field that barely existed a few years ago.
-
Legal EngineerDo the work.
-
Legal Engineering ManagerManage the work.
-
Head of Legal EngineeringMake the work.
-
VP, Legal EngineeringLead.

Your career is a jungle gym, not a ladder. People move sideways, up, and across.

Talent flows between services and consulting, legal tech and AI, law firms, and corporations, and it moves in both directions. Someone who starts at a law firm may go to a vendor, then into a corporation, then back to a firm in a bigger role. Each move builds skills that the next employer wants.

You are the people it’s happening through
The most important point is the simplest one. Nobody is just watching this change happen. The people reading this, the lawyers, legal ops leaders, technologists, and advisors, are the ones it is happening through. The new roles will be shaped by whoever steps into them first.

That is why the timing matters. You couldn’t be in a better place at a better time.
